Focus areas:
The Clinic for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care provides all of the anesthesia required at Essen University Hospital, be it for surgical or diagnostic procedures. The clinic also supervises several post-anesthetic recovery areas. In addition, the clinic provides all anesthesiology needs on a consulting basis to a regional psychiatric clinic (Rheinische Landes- und Hochschulklinik für Psychiatrie). Across all surgical clinics, 26,000 anesthetic procedures are carried out annually, many of them involving high-risk patients.
Focus areas are the anesthesiologist-led intensive care unit in which a physician is present 24 hours a day, one stationary and one mobile ECMO unit (artificial lungs) for the treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) including intensive care transportation capabilities (available 24 hours a day) and both transesophageal (TEE) and transthoracic (TTE) echocardiography.

Staff:
The Clinic for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care employs 73 physicians, 31 of whom are anesthesiology specialists. Of these specialists, 13 hold additional qualifications in special intensive medicine, 3 in special pain therapies, 2 in medical quality management, and 8 are qualified as heads of emergency medicine. Additional qualifications in emergency medicine are held by 12 physicians.
The physicians' team is complemented by 89 nurses, 66% of whom have advanced specialized training in the clinic's fields.
