Focus areas

The Institute of Cell Biology comprises 5 working groups: Molecular Cell Biology, Molecular Genetics, Molecular Developmental Biology, The BioChip Lab, and the DNA Repair Lab. Research at the Institute of Cell Biology focuses on basic academic research in the areas of cancer development and cancer treatment. All of the Institutes groups aim to shed light on the molecular mechanisms of cancer development, utilizing various methodological and thematic approaches. The ultimate goal is to provide the basis for cause-oriented clinical treatments. To this end, the Institute's employees work with state-of-the-art methods of biotechnology and molecular biology.

Fields of Research

  • Characterization of molecular mechanisms of stress-induced cell death in both tumor and normal tissues
  • Identification of mechanisms of resistance
  • Development of targeted strategies for the modulation of chemo and radiation sensitivity in both tumor and normal tissue cells
  • Analysis of normal B cell development and differentiation in humans
  • Study of the development of B cell lymphomas, including, but not limited to, Hodgkins lymphoma
  • Importance and function of cell specific transcription factors in cell differentiation and embryogenesis
  • Study of the development of DNA damage and of molecular repair mechanisms
  • Production of DNA microarrays and conduct of quantitative PCR analyses

Staff

The Institute of Cell Biology currently employs a total of 28 scientists and 12 technicians.
