The three-year study program comprises the integration of an individual research project and a two-year accompanying program, which counts 300 teaching units (Lehreinheiten=LE) à 45 minutes. 263 teaching units will be held in mandatory and elective modules. 37 teaching units can be elected by free choice and serve the development of core competencies in epidemiology. The seminars will be taught as modular, three-days or week-long courses. Therefore, the knowledge and skills enabling the dissertation complement one another and are acquired in consecutive seminars. The lectures take place at the Center of Clinical Epidemiology (CCE)/University medical center (UMC) in Essen on 2 weeks per semester in the 1st and 2nd academic year. During the whole period of the doctoral studies, physical presence at the CCE/UMC in Essen is only required for the courses and the 3-day RUHR School.

Amongst other things, mandatory modules of the PhD program include:

- Epidemiology
