Focus areas

  • Oxygen dependent gene expression; structure and function of cellular oxygen sensors
  • Interactions of hypoxia and immune system during inflammatory response periods
  • Importance of the hypoxia inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) in muscle trauma
  • Molecular imaging using 2-photon laser microscopy

Special consultations

For students interested in the Erasmus academic exchange program: Mondays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Fields of Research

  • Activation of the transcription factor complex hypoxia-inducible factor 1
  • Importance of oxygen dependent gene expression in the interactions of endothelium and monocytes during tumor vascularization
  • Importance of reactive species of oxygen and nitrogen in the function of cellular oxygen sensors and in muscle repair
  • Use of tissue-specific knockout models
  • Molecular imaging of protein-protein interactions using fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) technology

Teaching activities

Participation in curricular teaching of medical students, of medical biology (B. Sc.), and chemistry (M. Sc.) with a focus in medical-biological chemistry.

The Institute of Physiology employs a total of 11 scientists.
