The group of Bernd Giebel investigates lineage relationships of early human hematopoietic progenitors as well as mechanisms controlling their self-renewal and lineage specification. In this context the group is especially interested in dissecting roles of asymmetric cell division, which they have proven to occur in at least a proportion of the cells. More recently, the group became interested in the fast expanding field of extracellular vesicles (EVs), often termed exosomes or microvesicles, respectively. Here, the group is especially interested in deciphering the therapeutic potential of EVs released from mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs). After demonstrating therapeutic potentials in different systems including the treatment of a graft-versus-host disease patient, the group now aims to optimize and qualify the MSC-EV production for the clinical setting.
